Many soups provide a variety of vitamins and minerals, not to mention healthy protein. In some cases, however, soups can be too indulgent, loaded with saturated fat. Refer to the calorie calculator below to determine the calories and nutritional value of your favorite soups.

Good Nutritional Value

Many soups provides excellent nutritional value if they are made with wholesome ingredients like fresh vegetables and lean protein. Vegetable soups, for example, are low in calories but provide a variety of vitamins and minerals. Cream-based soups, on the other hand, may be high in calories and loaded with unhealthy fats. It all depends on the ingredients that go into the soup.

Calorie Content

Soups made with chicken or vegetable broth tend to be fairly low in calories while soups made with a cream base are higher in carbohydrates and calories. Gazpacho is one of the lowest calorie soups, containing only about 20 calories per 100-gram serving. In the middle of the pack are cream-based soups like cream of mushroom or clam chowder, each with between 35 and 45 calories per 100-gram serving. Some of the highest calorie soups are beef chili and chicken corn chowder, each with nearly 100 calories per 100-gram serving.
While many soups are full of nutritious ingredients and they are easy to eat, some of them contain too much sodium. Refer to the calorie counter below to determine the calories and sodium content of your favorite soups.

Easy to Eat

One of the main benefits of soup is that it is easy for people to eat, especially if they are sick or have trouble chewing. There is a reason why your mother always gave you chicken noodle soup when you were sick – it helped to warm you up and it was an easily digestible form of nutrition to help strengthen your body to get over the illness.

High Sodium Content

One thing to watch out for with canned soups is the sodium content – many of them contain a significant percentage of your total daily recommended intake. Prepackaged Asian-style soups tend to be the highest in sodium content, packing as much as 1,650mg per serving. Even a serving of Campbell’s condensed chicken noodle soup contains nearly 900mg of sodium. Try to select low-sodium options when you can – organic and all-natural soups tend to have lower sodium content.
